Since bursting into the mainstream with her role as the devious Wednesday Addams on Wednesday, Ortega has dressed in a fittingly macabre way on the red carpet a choice that will also work for Lydia. Call it somber, but Ortega emerged with a clear aesthetic, one devoid of any color or print. Though that doesn’t mean it’s been boring to watch. At the premiere of her hit Netflix show, for instance, she chose Versace’s black slip gown, complete with a dramatic veil spooky chic! At the 2023 SAG Awards, she wore Versace’s black leather strapless gown, complete with a sexy leg slit.
Most recently, at the 2023 Met Gala, Ortega was dressed by Thom Browne in a slightly Victorian look, complete with a corset, tiered skirt, and white collared shirt. That gothic yet preppy aesthetic couldn’t be more similar to Lydia’s wardrobe on screen especially that iconic scene where she floats up in the air and dances to Harry Belafonte s “Jump in the Line,” while wearing a full tartan skirt and black blazer. Now, does Ortega’s personal fashion tastes have anything to do with her being cast in Beetlejuice 2? Likely not that can be attributed to her acting chops. But you can’t deny that her own aesthetic couldn’t be more perfect for the job. Should the costume designers need inspiration for Ortega’s new character, they should consider diving into the actor’s own closet as a mood board She clearly has more than a few garments that could work.
